Purchased this last September when we lost the gas in our NYC apartment building (the whole building) due to leak and need for complete retrofitting. Gas out for almost 13 months, only 1/3rd of building now has gas as of Oct 10.
Used it daily for over a year--primarily the larger burner. Although it takes awhile to heat to reach boiling point, my only real "complaint," its three temps (High, medium, low) and warm make it very versatile for whatever you are cooking.
Is it the same as cooking on an electric or gas stove? No. But when we finally got the gas back this week, I opted to not have it turned on--I was that pleased with this last year's performance. This works for my sauteeing, steaming and soup-making. (This unit, along with a microwave, Foreman grill and an old Delonghi oven roaster take care of all I need in terms of cooking. We don't really do a lot of baking and we're not cooking big turkeys--if we were, I'd get an electric roaster.)
The old, old, old stove in this apartment never really worked properly and the oven was unusable. So, now, with this unit, and the other pieces, I can cook what we need. Without the minimum $30 a month we were paying to Con Ed (Base charge + actual usage), which we always questioned.
FYI: We would have bought two of these but this is an old NYC apartment and the way the electric wattage is set up, we couldn't use two at the same time anyway.
If you cook a lot at the same time, I'd suggest getting two of these (again, check that your electrical setup can support it.)
You don't seriously increase your KWH usage and you can really cut back on $ for gas.
We had tried a bigger brand and more expensive model, but it smelled and we really didn't feel that it was safe to operate. Amazon took it back very quickly and easily. (We love Amazon customer service!)
One small thing: About two weeks ago, for whatever reason, the "on" light started to turn on even when the unit is turned to off, when we hit the power on our power strip.
We just have to be careful that we don't put anything on it or put our hands over what is now a slightly warm "coil." We jiggle the knob and can sometimes get the light/coil to go off. After a year of daily use, not a biggie.
PS: We paid a lot less than the current price for it, making it a real bargain.
