Sunpentown SR-1881W 1200-Watt Countertop Induction Cooktop, White Review

Sunpentown SR-1881W 1200-Watt Countertop Induction Cooktop, White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For most Americans who are not familiar with table top cooking (at the dinner table), Asians usually will make sukiyaki, shabu shabu, hotpot, grilled Korean beef ribs, etc etc on the dinner table. Especially during the winter. Great at potlucks, or any gathering. It's really fun and takes the stress off of the hostess on "what to cook", because you just need to prep meat, veggies to cook, and dipping sauces.
The induction plate will work with only stainless steel, cast iron, or any other pots and pans that's specifially designed for induction.
The best thing is, it is ONLY hot inside the "circle", while the outer edges are cold to touch, so no burning fingers! Plus, the controls make it very easy to change the temperature. It is electrical, so you don't have to worry about burning alcohol, or butane or such at the table. MUCH more safe.
My family can't live without one. I probably cook with it just about every day in winter.
Two important notes: do NOT put a hot pan on a cold induction plate (or vice versa). It damages the coils, and the ceramic.
Hot pan goes on a hot plate; cold pan goes on a cold plate. Once you are done with the cooking, turn it off the heat. Let it cool down, and then you can wipe the surface with a lightly damp towel . I've cleaned mine with a paper towel lightly misted with 409. Just make sure you don't let anything drips down into the vents (where it can come into contact with the inside).
Also, there are vents in the induction plate, and MAKE SURE there are no liquids dripping over it. (It will be like pouring water onto a frayed electrical cord -- bam, plate dies instantly). At that point, it's dead.

Sleek and energy efficient, this convenient cooktop brings the comfort and health benefits of home-cooked foods to the office, dorm room, cabin, or anywhere in need of a portable heat source. Unlike standard electric elements, it supplies an induction heating element, which delivers the same precise control over the heat as with a gas burner, but without the danger of an open flame. The 1200-watt single burner provides warm and cook functions, nine power levels from 260 to 1200 watts, and nine temperature settings that range from 120 to 420 degrees F--perfect for everything from gently soft-boiled eggs to hearty soups, stews, and more. Its ceramic-glass surface creates instant heat to induction-compatible pans, and with the heat turned down will just as quickly decrease the heat to the pan. For added safety, the appliance comes with overheat protection, automatic shut-off protection, and it will stop producing heat if the pan gets accidentally removed from the cooktop. Even more, its magnetic waves have no effect on skin or anything other than iron or steel. Other highlights include an easy-to-clean design that can be wiped down with a damp cloth as needed, a user-friendly push-button control panel with a digital display, and a 99-minute timer that aids in properly cooking all dishes, reducing the risks of overcooking, burning, and waste. The ETL-approved induction cooktop measures 13-3/4 by 11-4/5 by 2-2/3 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Sunpentown SR-1851 1200-Watt Countertop Induction Cooktop Review

Sunpentown SR-1851 1200-Watt Countertop Induction Cooktop
Average Reviews:

I would have given it 5 stars if it was even a little bit less expensive: the price is bound to keep some people from wanting to try it.
Also, if you have a lot of non-ferrous, glass, etc. cookware, read this before buying an induction cooktop!
1. You won't be able to use non-ferrous (non-magnetic) pots and pans. Check your cookware with a magnet before purchasing an induction plate. If they're not magnetic at all, they probably won't work. We use enamel-coated cast iron pots, and they work really well.
2. Cooks much more efficiently than gas or electric (heats up faster, and doesn't shed excess heat in the area not in contact with the pot).
3. Your cooking area doesn't get hot, only the pot and the food do. If you have to cook in the summer, you'll appreciate not having to crank up the A/C.
It has some really great safely features, too: if the pot isn't compatible, or if you remove it, the cooktop starts to beep. If you don't put the pot back (or transfer it to one that works on induction stoves), it turns itself off. It has a sealed top and sealed controls so spills or splatters can't get into the element or the console.
I thought about getting one of these for about 7 months before making the purchase, and now I'm really glad that I did.

Magneflux Boiler Plate 1800 Watt Induction Cooktop Review

Magneflux Boiler Plate 1800 Watt Induction Cooktop
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just because this is 'Induction" does NOT mean it is as they say in their
"product features: your food heats faster and more evenly than by any other method - even twice as fast as gas cooktops!"
That is basically a false statement for a "1,800W induction".
A standard 20 year old gas range will boil 2 quarts of water faster than this induction hob will.
about 8 mins for the induction and about 7 mins for the gas.
If you are looking for fast induction cooking then you need to get a regular induction cook top with 3000W elements with power boost (basically draws the power from the other elements to add another 1000W).
Keep in mind that you will also need about 240v outlets with 10gauge wiring and 30-40amp fuses in your Kitchen to run an induction cooktop.
Not this one, but a regular induction cooktop.
If all you need is a portable cooktop that you can hook up outside next to your BBQ or anywhere else then this is great but its not like a regular induction cook top as far as speed of cooking.
You can also get this hob from Tuesday morning for $150

M'plus Interface Disc for Induction Review

M'plus Interface Disc for Induction
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well, with trepidation after reading the previous review I decided to try one of these. First some background.
I plan on replacing my 15 year old radiant cooktop and have decided that induction is the way to go. Cooking - particularly Italian - is my hobby and stress reducer. Before investing in both the cooktop and the almost $800 that it will cost to upgrade my 30 amp wiring to 40 amp, I decided to do some testing.
Several weeks ago I purchased a Waring Pro single burner induction cooktop (Waring Pro ICT100 Professional Induction Cooktop) to test out the concept. I was really impressed with induction cooking but, like many others, have a number of favorite pans which are not induction capable.
I had thought about a hybrid radiant/induction cooktop such as the Thermador but really would prefer more power and controllability such as available with the GE all induction cooktop. Thus I decided to try the induction plate figuring that, even though it didn't work for the previous reviewer, it might work under different circumstances and that I could always return it if it didn't work.
It arrived yesterday and I've now done several tests. The Waring Pro ICT100 is rated at 1400 watts. Mauviel's instruction say "Always use the interface disc on a low temperature." Consequently, I started at the lowest setting and increased only to medium.
Initially, I just used a copper bottom pan with several inches of water in the bottom. I used a cooking thermometer to check the temperature of the water and an infra-red thermometer to check the temperature of the top of the induction disc and the burner surface. After the water had heated to 180 degrees the surface of the induction disc was also 180 degrees and the surface of the cooktop was about 345 degrees. I had no problem with the cooktop turning off because of the temperature.
This morning I tried using one of my favorite pans -- A Calphalon non-stick frittata pan that my wife gave me several years ago. I used only the larger half of the pan to simply make scrambled eggs. While it took somewhat longer to heat the pan, I was able to make the eggs without a problem. The pan heated to about 220 degrees with both the surface of the disc and the cooktop being 220 degrees. Perhaps the difference between the burner surface temperature in the two tests is related to differing heat transfer properties between the two pans.
Obviously this thing does work. I only gave it three stars because I would have liked more specific instructions regarding the temperature at which it could be used. Mauviel does state "Never use the booster on the induction hob" but there is a great range between "low temperature" and that. It would be nice to have more specific information -- perhaps in the form of maximum wattage. I really wouldn't like to test out the disc to failure on a new $1700 cooktop!
Still, if you need to use non magnetic cookware on an induction cooktop, this does work. I can even picture buying a second one to have available if I need to use two non-induction capable pots/pans at the same time.
Now to convince my wife! ;-)
Addendum March 12, 08:
Well, the new GE induction cooktop was installed today. I tried the induction disk and it worked just as before. No problems with overheating. Of course, I did limit the induction setting to about 1/2 maximum.
Addendum August 20, 2008:
Well, I've used this several more times and am more and more satisfied with how it works. If I could, I would change my review rating to 4 stars. It certainly is a useful addition if one has an induction cooktop and some favorite non-induction capable cookware. I have used it with a power of 7 1/2 (out of 9) on my GE cooktop without problem.

Magneflux Portable Induction Cooktop Includes non-stick finish pan(ENERGY EFFICIENT) Review

Magneflux Portable Induction Cooktop Includes non-stick finish pan(ENERGY EFFICIENT)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
An induction cooker is different from a standard electric coil since the cooking surface remains relatively cool, being largely heated by the pan; the surrounding surface will remain cool to the touch. Instead of the heat loss we recognize as a warm or hot kitchen, the heat is 70-90% efficiently directed to the pan and little heat is lost to the air except from the hot pan. The cooker requires ferrous (metal)cookware that a magnet will stick to; aluminum or glass will not work unless a special heating plate is put on the cooktop that will transfer the heat to the non-ferrous material. The reason for this is that the cooker has an electromagnetic coil that creates an electrical field, which in turn causes the pot to heat up by the induced current since the cookware will not be as good a conductor as the copper coil in the cooktop. All instructions make particular note for those with a pacemaker or defibrillator to not use this sort of cooking method since it could potentially interfere with the devices.
This induction cooker is 1800 watts, which to my understanding is the most powerful that can be used on a 110V circuit. There are actually 2 models; they have the same feature set, but this one has stainless steel trim and comes with a non-stick pan, and the other is an all black finish and no pan. It doesn't have a built in timer, but comes with a battery powered digital timer. This, in some ways, is better since you can keep the timer near you in other rooms as a reminder. It has 9 power levels arranged in 3 groups: low, medium and high; each having 3 sets of temperatures. The temperature settings range from 150 degrees F to a high of 500 degrees F. The controls are true touch type, not blister type press pads, and are sensitive to a light touch. There are, as in most, 2 circles indicated for pan placement and it is supposed to sense the correct pan size, the minimum being a 5 inch diameter, the maximum being about 9 inches. The unit looks and feels like a quality item. The glass top is easily cleaned with the included microfiber cloth. Like most units the cooling fan can be heard and remains on for a minute or so after it is off for cooling the coils.
It seems to have even heat and is every bit as responsive as gas. It is different cooking with however. At the lowest heat it pulses to keep the temperature constant, which can take some getting used to. Again, all units do this; it's the nature of the beast. The cooktop remains cool to the touch and heats very quickly. No, I have not done the boiling water test, but my stir fry turned out fine with no drama.
I got this as an introduction to this type of cooking, so I can't comment on other units. I am very happy with the build quality and would purchase it again.
UPDATE 9 September: I've had more of a chance to use this unit and while I still like it and feel that it is well worth the money, there are a few caveats:
The low temperature settings are 150, 175 and 200, and the medium begins with 250. For something like rice that depends upon steaming, 200 is too low and 250 tends to be just a bit too high. By finessing the controls a well cooked rice can be done, but it would be easier if there were more control over the temperature. On the other hand, I continue to be impressed with the immediate control of temperature and its power to take on things like browning meat. It was easy to make golden translucent sauteed onions and brown meat for an excellent goulash; but because of the power I had to be careful to watch the liquid level. Although there is definitely a learning curve, all meals prepared thus far have been quite good. The pan that comes with this unit is a very nice non-stick one. It does not come with a lid, but a Calphalon 12 inch glass lid fits it perfectly. For some reason the bottom isn't flat so oil tends to run to the sides. This hasn't been an issue with most things since not much oil is needed with non-stick, and sauces have been fine.
The only unit that I have seen that has infinite settings is the Viking, which is also 1800 watts, but costs $500. It is also the only one that I have seen that has a rotary control, which is far more precise and faster to use. Before you get put off from a touch pad though,it has its virtues, such as ease of clean up and no mechanical components to fail, but is a bit slower to change things quickly, such as changing quickly when something is boiling over. I hope that this information will be useful to those trying to sort things out.
As a final note, I also bought a Viking unit and have found it to be easier to manage the heat with the rotary control knob. Although the noise from the fan in the magneflux didn't bother me, the Viking is also much quieter if that is a consideration for you. Other than boiling water or heating oil perhaps, don't be misled by cooking speed claims. Once the pot/pan is at the right temperature it will take as long to cook as any other conventional method. Its strength is with the immediate responsiveness to control and the area surrounding it remaining relatively cool.

Koolatron TCXU-24 Total Chef Automatic Coffee and Wine Urn 24-Cup Capacity, Silver Review

Koolatron TCXU-24 Total Chef Automatic Coffee and Wine Urn 24-Cup Capacity, Silver
Average Reviews:

I have owned two (2) of these 24-cup coffee urn products, over the past 3+ years. The first one began leaking at about the end of the first year, so we liked the product enough to locate and purchase our second unit. The second urn worked well for about ten (10) months, but, this past week the device that controls the flow of liquid from the urn broke. Although we can still make our coffee, we must now LADDLE IT OUT OF THE URN. Not the best way to start one's day, I'm very sure.
I've had the device completely disassembled and attempted to repair the faulty item (it is a clear plastic unit, rather barrel-shaped, with a slot that allows the fliud to be discharged when the barrel is turned to the opening. The shaft that connects to the lever on the outside of the urn has snapped off and will not accept any of the glueing products that I've tried, attempting to repair it (even tried to re-enforce the device, inside, to no avail).
Since this is my second urn, and the problem is NOT A REPEAT OF THE PROBLEM IN THE FIRST URN, I feel the consumer should be aware that the life expectancy of these products seems to be far less than the average consumer might expect, for an in-home electronic appliance, and incredibly short for any possible commercial use.
When working, the product was more than satisfactory, but, the unexpectedly short projected life of the product should be noted on the product, and/or these faults should be reflected in the pricing of the unit(s). If I could have found a parts supplier, I might not be so negative about the product either, but, having to purchase a new unit EVERY YEAR seems totally unfair to the consumer likely to purchase this product.

1300 Watts Induction Cooktop (Silver) Review

1300 Watts Induction Cooktop (Silver)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I LOVE it. I hardly ever use my (electric) range. Anticipating that I'd be moving off the natural gas grid I bought this 2.5 yrs ago to see what life with Induction would be like. It's fabulous. Fast, responsive, accurate. I'm looking forward to remodeling my kitchen next year and adding a 30 inch all induction cooktop. I like a 36" cooktop, but with a portable like this one tucked away I can haul it out when I need the extra burner, and will be able to use my space more efficiently.
If you're curious about Induction, try one of the portables first. At worst, you've got a great extra station for a hot appetizer when you throw your next party.
Check out the Henkels Induction-ready cookware. One reason I balked at moving to Induction was that the cost of buying All-Clad adds a lot to the picture. But the Henkels is GREAT, well priced, comfortable to use, heavy. I hate giving up my clay pots that I use on the stove top, but - all around, Induction is the best alternative to gas. At least I'll be able to keep using them in the oven.

Micro-Induction Cooktop provides the best in cooktop performance, safety and efficiency. Induction heats as electricity flows through a coil to produce a magnetic field under the ceramic plate. When a ferromagnetic cookware is placed on the ceramic surface, currents are induced in the cookware and instant heat is generated due to the resistance of the pan. Heat is generated to the pan only and no heat is lost. As there are no open flames, inductions are safer to use than conventional burners. Once cookware is removed, all molecular activity ceases and heating is stopped immediately.

I love my cooktop already. I have done spaghetti, cooked filling for a cherry pie and done some things in my new Fagor stainless pressure cooker. It is so fast, sensitive and accurate. I love the feature that turns off the burner when you remove the pan. I also love having no knobs to clean around. I am a little scared with the glass top and the danger of scratching it, but so far, so good. I had the old coil type burners before and am not used to this type surface. It is beautiful too. Sleak and shiny. I would highly recommend this product with my experiences so far. I have had it about 3 weeks and love it. It saves energy and cooks so fast.

I purchased this hybrid so that I would be able to continue to use my regular cooking utensils and new utensils for the induction coils. I was very impressed with both sections of the cook top. After having gained experience with the induction section I would recommend that people have no fear of going to induction cooking only. I was very satisfied with the induction cooking and highly encourage anyone to replace their electric or gas cook tops with an induction unit.
On the down side, it is a little hard to keep clean. Using their cleaner in small sections at a time works best. When streaks' that remain are hard to remove, I found a damp sponge followed by a clean dry towel makes it easy to polish.

Max Burton 6500 ProChef 1800-Watt Commercial Induction Cooktop Review

Max Burton 6500 ProChef 1800-Watt Commercial Induction Cooktop
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had this item for a few weeks now, and it has performed well. It not only lets you select the power in watts for heating things up, but it will also let you select the temperature. Neither the watts or the temperature are infinitely adjustable, but there are enough choices to make it usable. For instance in temp mode you can select between 180 or 210 degrees, basically boiling or not. It will go all the way down to 140. The wattage goes all the way up to 1800 for fast heating. The wattage and temperature modes are independent of each other. Change to power and set the wattage, it will pump out that many watts continuously. Change to temperature and it will maintain the temperature you set (I assume on the bottom of the pot). As I'm sure most know you have to have pots and pans that are magnetic to make it work, and the disk they sell is no alternative if you want to boil water, or heat things up alot. My allclad works great as do other pots I have. My Cuisinart pots don't, so take a magnet to find out. The stronger the magnet attracts the better the pot or pan will work (meaning the less energy will be used to heat the pot). I found that at its highest setting it will boil a quart of water from 64 degrees in less than 4 minutes.
UPDATE
I've had this unit for over a month now, and the more I use it the more I like it. Its nice having the temperature setting so I can heat soup or chili without worrying about it boiling over if I get busy. I find it less useful with large frying pans for cooking ground beef as it doesn't have a very large heating area. I'm using allclad pans so I assume its not the cookware. Of course when you compare 1800 watts to a gas burner on my range, the electric comes up short on power. What can you expect from a 110 outlet. It boils water in a 2 qt pot very fast, so I have to keep my eyes on it. I made 12 quarts of chili on it last week, and never burnt anything to the bottom of the pot by using the 180 degree setting. It was on the burner for 3 hours. Simply amazing.

Regal Ware 3-Piece Induction Cooktop/Cookware Set Review

Regal Ware 3-Piece Induction Cooktop/Cookware Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had read other reviews on the stand alone cooktops for this brand and the others prior to my purchase. When it arrived I tested it out for myself. It would not operate with my cookware which is expensive but not magnetic. It was a good thing I purchased it with the magnetic pan and lid which were made to work with the cooktop. The pan was heavy and made well enough.
My first experiment was to boil water and to try out the different heat settings. I noticed when I boiled the water that although the cooktop had two circles on the top which made me think that the heat would come from the outer circle if I turned up the heat, this was not the case. Turning up the heat makes the magnetics in the system whirl faster, but the heat source comes directly from the smaller ring. The pan burns hotter where the small circle is on the cooktop.
My next experiment was with food. I sprayed cooking oil inside the pan coating the bottom and the sides. I turned the heat to medium and heated up partially frozen mac and cheese that I had taken out of the freezer and had nuked for 1 minute to get it out of it's container. As the mac defrosted I added in some previously cooked hamburger from the fridge, frozen peas and frozen corn. I noticed that the mac was sticking to the pan so I added about 1/2 cup of cold water. I put the lid on the pan to help things heat up.
When I saw the liquid start to bubble, I took the lid off and stirred. The bottom was still trying to stick. It did not heat evenly and I had to stir the food towards the center to get it all heated. End result - food did not burn, heated up quickly, but I had to shift food to the heat source to get it hot. I think a teflon coated pan would work better.
The inner cooktop was hot when the pan was removed but it cooled down quicker than my glass top stove. I think with a little practice I can get more comfortable with it's use. I will be taking this to school with me to teach my students cooking on Fridays so they can apply their math and reading skills. I hope they will get excited about the science of how it works as well.

The new Regal Ware 3 piece induction set includes a 10 Inch tri-ply stainless steel covered fry pan and a single induction cooktop. This will make an incredible addition to any kitchen. Induction Cooktops utilize over 90% of the energy they create. Compare this to electric coil cooktops (around 50%) and gas cooktops (around 40%) and you will see why induction cooktops are incredibly efficient. Because induction cooktops utilize such a high percentage of the energy created, they heat food almost twice as fast as either gas or electric. The Induction Cooktop works with any standard kitchen outlet, and has 6 separate power settings and a timer. It also features an auto shut off, as well as a built in sensor that will shut the unit off if the temperature becomes too high. The 10 inch tri-ply stainless steel fry pan features two sating finished sheets of stainless steel surrounding a pure aluminum core. The aluminum core extends all the way up the sides to provide perfectly even heat with a cooking surface of 18/10 304 stainless steel. The 10 inch fry pan features a unique welded handle design which allows a perfectly clean interior cooking surface. The fry pan includes a tempered glass cover. Dishwasher safe and oven safe to 500 degrees. The cover is oven safe to 400 degrees.

Fagor Double Induction Buffet Warmer Review

Fagor Double Induction Buffet Warmer

Original Review April 3, 2010
All of the reviews for the Fagor Portable Induction Cooktop apply to this one, so you should go read those. This is the 'double' version of that one. I've never found the controls to be non-responsive. You do have to lift your finger up & put it down again for it to register - sliding from one button to the other doesn't activate the 2nd button. If the control area gets wet, just wipe it down with a towel.
The most important thing you need to know is that you can't use both burners on max, just one at a time. This is alluded to on the box/in the description (it's why they call it a "buffet warmer" and not a "double cooktop"), but never explicitly stated.
There are six power level settings (1 to 6) and you can only use a combined total of 6. So that's 6+0 (saute + off), 5+1 (medium high + keep warm), 4+2 (boil water + reheat), or 3+3 (gently simmer on both), or any combination that adds up to 6 or less (2+2, 3+2 etc).
I find that 5 is enough to get a stainless steel pan hot enough to pan fry and keep it at the right temperature, but you may want the option to go up to 6 when you start adding ingredients. 1 is enough to keep water hot & steaming. 2 is enough to keep water on a low boil (only boils directly above the heated areas, stops immediately when you turn it off). 3 is enough to keep things at a low-moderate boil. If you have a large pot of water, you 2 will take a long time to get it boiling, but it will keep it there. Other reviewers (of the single burner version) say that a setting between 2 & 3 would be welcome for simmering things, and I sort of agree with them. I suspect they calibrated it so that 2 would be just enough of a boil to see bubbles. The efficiency of our pot/pan may also play a role in how well each setting works.
So while they call it a warmer, you can cook with it, you just can't use both burners for frying at the same time, one will always be a "back burner" - keep your sauce warm while you prepare your main ingredients on the other burner.
As I was researching cooktops, I saw that the price for double cooktops was more than triple the price of a single cooktop. I figured that the double (or greater) cooktops were industrial level and meant to be stove replacements. I was right. The double cooktops all use 220 volts - industrial use, some air conditioners, etc. rather than the 120 volts that comes out of your standard electric socket.
This cooktop is 120v so it's limited in how much it can do. If it allowed both burners to go to max simultaneously, you'd blow a fuse. This is also why I wouldn't recommend buying two single induction cooktops and plugging them into the same circuit (though if you have two outlets on two different circuits - go for it).
As with all induction cooktops, you need a compatible pot or pan. Basically it has to have a flat bottom & a magnet should stick to it. An aluminum core will also help distribute heat more evenly. It heats the pot or pan directly, without wasting any energy (it's really like magic). It will turn itself off in 9 seconds if there is no pot or pan above it, so you have to limit the time you take something off the cooktop surface to 9 seconds, which can be annoying when cooking (for example) eggs, which you may want to let cool/even out before putting back on the cooktop.
If you spill some egg on the cooktop, the heat radiating off of the pan may cook it, but the cooktop itself won't cook it (unless there's leftover heat from the pan there - the cooktop will get hot from the heat radiating off of the pan, but does not produce heat itself).
The burners are a decent distance apart - 11 inches on center. So no using two 12" skillets at the same time. The timer works well - using Timer + adds 5 minutes, and Timer - subtracts 1 minute, giving you fine control over the timer. The cooktop will turn off after that amount of time.
All the controls are duplicated - so there are two timers (one for the left cooktop, one for the right cooktop). If you try to turn the heat up above the combined ouput of 6, it won't let you. There's also a child lock - hold the button for a few seconds to lock the controls. Hold it for a few seconds to release.
There are vents on the bottom & back that you need to keep clear, and it the fan can get noisy, but it's not so bad. There's no guarantee that the cooktop will be level if your surface isn't level, so getting a large flat grill pan (you can probably only fit one at a time and need one that is induction friendly to spread the heat evenly) means your eggs will run off into a corner if it isn't level. This may or may not be an issue for you, and may or may not be something you could easily fix. I got a fagor grill pan free with my purchase at a local store that sells this cooktop, as well as other things for the table.
All in all, for roughly twice the price of other cooktops (I got a cheap single induction cooktop for 1/3 this price in Chinatown) and for 50% more than the price of the Fagor single induction cooktops, you get something you couldn't get otherwise - two induction burners that work at 120v. and for less than a small fortune. Sure you can't use both on max at once, but it gives you way more options than any single burner will give you.
Update April 29, 2010
A few days ago I was cooking with a 12" skillet and after I was done as I was washing the skillet, I noticed something sticky on the bottom. Confused about where it came from, I looked at the skillet and noticed that there's a plastic lip that rises up above the glass cooking surface that got melted by the skillet. I posted some pictures for you to see in the customer photo section above.
As you can see in the pictures, the 12" skillet is technically small enough to fit on the cooktop, but you'd have to keep your eye on it nonstop, and who does that? When I'm skillet cooking it's constantly on the move. Raising the plastic molding above the glass cooktop virtually guarantees that items with larger flat surfaces will come in contact with & melt the plastic.
The inexpensive Tatung (single induction) cooktop that I purchased in Chinatown (and which is available elsewhere online) doesn't have anything raised above the cooktop surface - the cooktop surface is a good half a centimeter above anthing else.
Because of this, I downgrade my review from 4 stars to 3 stars. It's still a great cooktop for "cooking one thing on high and keeping one thing warm" provided you don't use items with very large flat surfaces such as 12" skillets and don't go near the edges with anything while it's hot.

iPortable Induction Cooker Review

Having owned a 5 zone induction cooktop imported from the UK in my previous home, I was already spoiled and no stranger to the responsiveness, efficiency, and pure power of induction cooking as well as the different brand units out there. I was a tad nervous about plunking down $500 for a single induction burner, however, this little workhorse has proven to be one of the most joyously hard working appliances in this old kitchen being used exclusively now while the archaic smooth top stove sits cool and idle.
The heat settings on this unit are spontaneous and responsive with a range that will shame your pro-gas stove or cooktop for putting a perfect sear on a roast and boiling a large pot of water lightening fast, plus all settings in between that are dead on accurate as well as a setting low enough to be used as a hot plate. And all this can be done anywhere, even outdoors. What a concept!
I highly recommend this Viking cooker if you are considering bringing induction into your home and would like a test drive a unit that is truly top notch and representative of the genre.
***Important to remember with all induction cooktops is your cookware must be ferrous or magnetic. You can test your pots and pan bottoms with an ordinary kitchen magnet. Cast iron and enameled steel work wonderfully on induction and now there are many cookware manufacturers producing lines of stainless steel that are induction capable.

It's small, light, doesn't stink and works well. Not for cold weather camping, but who wants to sleep in the cold anyway. Feeding a family of four is easy with this.

This sturdy little burner is extremely portable and can easily go to tailgate parties, picnics, or camping. It's not such a bad thing to have around during a power outage either. An easy to load butane canister provides the fuel, and burns more efficiently than propane or kerosene, while remaining clean and odorless. No more kerosene-flavored hot dogs!

KitchenAid Architect Series II KECD807XBL 30 Smoothtop Electric Cooktop, 400 CFM downdraft - Black Review

This cook top is elegantly designed and nice to look at. It heats up quickly and evenly and we're happy overall with the cooking quality. We are, however, very disappointed with how NOISY the vent fan is and how it VIBRATES so much that our pans constantly migrate off the center of the elements. We have to continually watch them to make sure they are centered and getting even heat. The vent is not that effective at removing fumes and steam even on the highest speed. We switched from a natural gas cook top because it was hard to clean but the glass ceramic is worse. Every little thing sticks and you literally have to scrape fine food particles off with a razor blade in addition to using a special cleanser specifically for this type of surface. I have to buff the surface repeatedly (with a LOT of elbow grease) each time I clean it. It's not a simple wipe it and you're done. We would not recommend this cook top. It's too bad showrooms don't really let consumers see this and other appliances like dishwashers, washing machines, blenders, etc. in action before you buy them.

This cooktop is great for island or peninsula installation as its built-in downdraft vent captures smoke steam and odors right at the surface And for efficient heating two double-ring round elements allow you to choose which to use based on cookware size
