Chef'sChoice 679 Cordless 1-3/4-Quart Electric Glass Kettle Review

This electric tea kettle boils 1.75 litre of tap water in exactly 8 minutes, then automatically shuts itself off. It is saving us time and cooking fuel, and saves itself from boiling dry and self-destructing. I highly recommend it for those who need a couple pots of boiling water every day. So far(in a month or two), neither the heating plate in the bottom nor the glass pot itself have crusted up with mineral deposits and the water tastes pure and clean.

With 1500 watts of power and a concealed heating element, this electric kettle quickly boils up to 1-3/4 quarts of water, producing hot water for tea, hot chocolate, instant soup, and more--faster than a stove or microwave and using 50-percent less energy than with an electric stovetop. See at a glance how much water remains and when water's about to boil thanks to the unit's contemporary design that combines brushed stainless steel with heat-resistant glass. The kettle lifts off its 360-degree swivel power base for cordless pouring and can be set back down on the power base in any direction. For added convenience, it provides a comfortable soft-touch handle, a one-handed push-button lid opening for easy filling at the sink, an illuminated on/off switch, a clearly marked water gauge, and an adjustable-length power cord that stores in the base. Safety features include automatic shut-off once water reaches a full boil, dual boil-dry protection, and a cool-touch base and lid-lock. Convenient for left- or right-handed users, the electric kettle measures approximately 8-1/2 by 6 by 10-1/2 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Chef's Choice 675 International Cordless Electric Hot Pot Review

Chef's Choice 675 International Cordless Electric Hot Pot
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just recieved this kettle to replace a rival hotpot. The Rival lacked an on-off switch. It also gave off some strange tastes and some say stainless is better than plastic that way.
I reheat coffee and heat canned goods in the hotpot as it's easier for me than the range and the wide opening on this hotpot allows one to clean it easily though the lid won't lift as far as you'd like.
On recieving this kettle my first thought was the base was of light gauge plastic - seemed a little cheap. But I suppose that's ok if it turns out to be durable. Next I was amazed that the stainless vessel was of lighter gauge than I expected. This is probably all good though. Some reviewers of the other stainless kettles remark that they are heavy and get 'dangerously' hot. This one is actually reasonably light to maneuver. And if I boil 2 cups of water - turning it off myself which is before the automatic shut off - the stainless is just warm at the top; not really hot. If it doesn't wear out this is fine for my needs. Also - it looks like the picture. I give it one star for the appearance of the polished stainless, but that is subjective. Have to admit though, it cleans good.
3 year later: Still works fine and I've fired it up every day 3-5 times. V Fine.

This Electric Kettle is quite simple without any frills. For the price, it does what it claims to do. It boils water quickly , the water level is easy to see and has the auto-shut off feature. I have used it reliably to boil water for tea, oatmeal etc. The water is quite hot, so use caution when pouring it out. The lid , can sometimes be hard to close & open.

The product works as expected; the flow of cold water from the hose going into the heater smooth. The system does have a flaw, it needs to be tightened well otherwise water sprays everywhere.

ZODI Outback Gear Top Pro Stove Review

ZODI Outback Gear Top Pro Stove
Average Reviews:

When I first opened the package, I was...
...whelmed.
The padded gear bag's plastic liner is brittle. It cracked and wouldn't hold water after the first week. The heating element is merely a coil of soft copper tubing poked into a sheet-metal box. The D-cell-powered 1/4-scale model sump pump caused laughter.
It works.
We now take showers inside our pop-up truck camper *in the winter*. We use the existing 12V water pump by force-fitting the input hose over the sink faucet while the heater is on the stove burner. When the water is really cold, we have to cycle the pump on and off (not recommended by the instructions, but then neither is using the thing inside on my inside stove, right?)
I could probably rig one up with $25 ~ $50 in hardware. But it would take half a day or more and probably look like a kluge. So, for a hundred extra bucks I get to have a camping shower that works.
Fair enough, at least it works.
EDIT: Somebody just taught me how to use a garden variety tank sprayer, filled with warm water, as a camp shower. This is such a better idea, that I am abandoning this piece of equipment and moving to the tank sprayer. Just sayin'...

Coleman Hot Water-On-Demand Portable Water Heater Review

Coleman Hot Water-On-Demand Portable Water Heater
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used this heater last summer, for washing dishes, and showers while boat camping. Heater works off a propane canister, so have extras of those. Pump depends on a small battery that has its own compartment. I carried a spare battery out of caution, but didn't need it on my longest trip of three nights with three people. I would guess 6-7 short showers were taken, along with washing dishes and hand washings during meal prep.
Easy to use. Variable temp. control, from cold to scalding just like a water tap at home, (though a much lower pressure) The water gets hot very quickly.
Instructions say not to use lake or stream water. I decided that applies if you are going to use the heater for cooking or drinking water. Since I use mine only for dish-washing/hand-wahing/showering, I ignored this instruction. There is an attachment for hooking to a garden hose, but I didn't get this as I don't camp where potable water is avialable. If you camp with kids, once it is used with non-potable water, I stongly recommend that you make sure they understand that they are not to drink water from the tap.
I found that a large three gallon collapsable bucket was much handier than the collapable container supplied.
As I remember, I purchased the shower attachment seperately. After our first camp trip with the heater, I replaced the hose on the shower attachment with a longer piece of plastic tubing bought at the hardware store, as the original tube was too short to work well. This was real easy to do and not very expensive and I would recommend it if you are more than four feet tall and want to use the heater for showers.
This is unit is not for pack-backing. But it you car camp or boat camp away from hot water and like the luxury of running hot water, this is a great unit. Not that heavy and and no bigger than a small cooler.
I have a Zodi which I used before I got this. The Zodi does a good job of heating water and is somewhat lighter and more compact. I like the Coleman better however. The swing-out spout on the Coleman may look like a gimmick, but if your are washing dishes over a dishpan it realy is an advantage. The instant on/off feature of the Coleman is a also great advantage
especially when showering. You can rinse off, shut off the water, soap up and turn on the water for a final rinse with just a turn of a dial. Since even three gallons of water goes fast, the ease of shutting off the unit "in between" is very handy. With the Zodi the best approach I found was to put the shower-head in the water supply "in between." This works, but it means the burner is continuing to run, using fuel, and if your are not quick, the water can get hotter than you may want. (Shuting off the Zodi means you have to get out the lighter or matches to relight, which can be a pain if you are wet and soapy.) With the Colman's built in igniter, a simple turn of the dial gets every thing going again. By the way, so far the igniter has worked as flawlessly as the one on the gas range top at home. You turn the dial, you hear a little "swoosh" as the burner comes on, and you have hot water.
I also bought the carry case which I recommend.

Aroma AWK-115S Hot H20 X-Press 1-1/2-Liter Cordless Water Kettle Review

[Originally review January 2009 (3 stars), Updated July 2010]
We bought one of these for our home and liked it so much I got another for my office. It is a quick safe way to boil water. It works much better than our teapot on our conventional stove and you can leave the room without worry about all the water boiling out and a possible fire.
It is so efficient that we often use it to heat up water before putting it in a pan on the stove. It is much faster. When we are making pasta we will put a small amount of water in a large pan and fill the teapot. The water in the pot is boiling before the water on the stove. The pot is light, even when full, and has no aftertaste like I have read some of the plastic ones do.
HOWEVER, we had owned our home pot for less than six months when the 'on' switch broke off. The pot was still usable, but you have to reach in and activate it with a fingernail. It was under limited warranty, but that involved mailing it to San Diego at our own cost and sending them a check for $8 to have it returned. Including the time and materials to package it up and then drive to the post office and have it gone for 2-4 weeks wasn't worth the effort.
I have concluded we just got a lemon. Because this happened and the warranty policy was so cumbersome, I originally gave this 3 stars. But our other one is working fine and the broken piece has turned out to be a small inconvenience, so I have revised my rating to 4.6, rounding up to 5.

Hamilton Beach 40898 Cool-Touch Cordless 8 Cup Electric Kettle Review

Hamilton Beach 40898 Cool-Touch Cordless 8 Cup Electric Kettle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Most importantly, my wife loves it, and she is a gadget-phobe. I just bought a second one for my mother.
We have been using it for two months now, and no problems so far.
After my usual exhaustive search, I selected this tea kettle because it had the best combination of features.
PRO:
- All metal: stainless steel liner and no exposed heating element to accumulate scale buildup. The lid is plastic but it doesn't come into contact with the water. I really didn't like the idea of boiling water in contact with plastic.
- Cool touch exterior for safety and also it insulates the water inside, keeping it hotter after the kettle shuts off upon boiling.
- Nice balance for the handle - I find the electric kettles with the handle on the top to be much more difficult to lift and pour. This one has the handle on the side - much better.
- Wide mouth top is easy to fill and clean. The lid pivots in the middle - too hard to describe so I added a clip from the user manual. Easy to remove lid to clean, though as others mentioned it does get in the way a bit when you're filling the kettle.
- As with many other kettles, it is cordless -- the kettle lifts easily off and on from the corded base, and you can hide any extra power cord inside the base.
CON (none of these matter to me or my wife):
- No water level indication, but then if there were you would probably have connections that could leak over time and potentially plastic parts in contact with water.
- Water temperature is not adjustable.

With its concealed heating element, this electric kettle quickly brings up to 64 ounces of water to a rolling boil. Simply fill the kettle at the sink, return it to its 360-degree power base, and flip the switch to "on". In a matter of minutes, hot water will be ready to use for anything from tea, hot cocoa, or instant coffee to instant soup, baby formula, or noodles. After the water reaches a full boil, the kettle turns off automatically for peace of mind--no need to worry about it boiling dry. The unit also provides a comfortable easy-grip handle, a lid that locks for safety and opens with a thumb-activated button, a drip-free pouring spout, and a cordless design for graceful serving. Other highlights include an on/off indicator light, double-wall stainless-steel housing that stays cool to the touch, a beautiful brushed finish, and a mineral-deposit filter for pure, great-tasting water. Great for in a kitchen, office, or dorm room, the electric kettle measures 8-1/2 by 6 by 10 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.
