(More customer reviews)I tried this type of fire starter and I'm just not impressed. You need a good knife to make shavings with, and then if you aren't careful you need to sharpen the knife. The sparking rod on the top doesn't really give you a shower of sparks either. Once you get your shavings lit it does ok, but it's more work than it's worth. I'd look into the Swedish FireSteel instead. Much better product, more sparks and no knife required.

(More customer reviews)This is a high value item! I bought one at Wal-Mart, it didn't come with a striker, but I just used a 2" piece of hacksaw blade. I recommend to anyone that has this produce to find an old hacksaw blade to snap off a striker and attach it to the chain. Another thing, if you are carrying this you should carry some emergency tinder. I recommend a 35mm film cannister filled with either lint from the clothes dryer lint trap or cotton balls soaked with vaseline. Both will ignite on the first spark, it will make a believer out of you, trust me.
