Coleman Two-Mantle Dual Fuel Lantern with Hard Case Review

Coleman Two-Mantle Dual Fuel Lantern with Hard Case
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this lantern because it was small and I like the bright light these lanterns throw, and the coleman hiss for nostalgic reasons. The size difference between this and the larger dual fuel one wasn't clear to me, so I ordered that by mistake first, and returned it at small cost. I like the idea of a case to protect it, anyway.
The first time I used this one, it worked fine. It doesn't throw a blinding light, but a fully satisfying one -- good for its size, I'm not disappointed. Packing it out in the case was the problem; it worked well to the car, but back to the house the bottom fell out, the lantern dropped and broke both the glass and the mantels. I think the sides of the plastic case got compressed in the car packing and that's all it takes to release the base. I'll replace the parts at unknown cost and I'll think twice before I carry it again.

Aviation Survival Firestarter Review

Aviation Survival Firestarter
Average Reviews:

I tried this type of fire starter and I'm just not impressed. You need a good knife to make shavings with, and then if you aren't careful you need to sharpen the knife. The sparking rod on the top doesn't really give you a shower of sparks either. Once you get your shavings lit it does ok, but it's more work than it's worth. I'd look into the Swedish FireSteel instead. Much better product, more sparks and no knife required.

Sengoku OR-77 HeatMate Omni-Radiant 10,000-BTU Portable Kerosene Heater Review

Sengoku OR-77 HeatMate Omni-Radiant 10,000-BTU Portable Kerosene Heater
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Pros -- This thing delivers the heat! I live in a 980 sq. ft. mobile home with an open living room and kitchen. Even during the coldest months this unit kept me warm during power failures. The heat even traveled to the farthest bedroom, not heating it to the fullest, but keeping away the chill. It runs silently.
The Cons -It does not run for the 12 hours, as stated on the outer carton. I suppose if you heated a very small bathroom it would regulate itself to the full 12 hours. I have to refill the tank every four hours. Since the unit is rather heavy and bulky it's difficult to carry it outside for refueling. It's even heavier on the return trip because of the full tank of kerosene. The carrying handle doesn't feel secure enough to haul that weight.
Unless you run the tank completely dry, this unit flares up and sends a cloud of black smoke into the room during shutdown. A kerosene-stink will linger for half an hour. It has to be taken apart and cleaned every few days to remove the carbon build-up on the wick. I have not yet been successful at removing all that carbon.
A kerosene heater is not for wimps or for those who won't follow safety instructions. It can be dangerous.
I wouldn't recommend this product for someone looking to run it all winter long to cut down on their heating bill.
I would, however, recommend it for someone wishing to have an optional heating source available during emergencies. If the only choices are to freeze or find another heating source, this will unit will do the job well.
I believe the Cons (as stated) are typical of all portable kerosene heaters, so I will not fault this unit in those areas. With the exception of the misleading "runs for up to 12 hours", this unit does what it's supposed to do. That's why I give it five stars.

Reliable and user friendly, this omni-radiant kerosene heater features a 10,000-BTU heating capacity and can deliver soothing warmth to rooms up to 380 square feet or up to 6 by 6 feet outdoors. The unit features automatic push-button ignition and a 1.2-gallon fuel capacity that will provide 12 to 14 hours of heat before needing to be refilled. Use it in the basement or garage, out on the back deck, or at the cabin. Because it does not require electricity to operate, the heater makes an excellent choice for both everyday supplemental heating as well as for emergency situations when the power goes out. Other design details include a fuel gauge, automatic safety shut-off, a protective grill, and a stable base to help prevent tipping over. A Siphon pump and batteries come included. Safe to use and economical to operate, the UL-listed portable heater measures 15 by 15 by 23 inches and carries a two-year limited warranty.

Gobspark Firesteel with Super Scraper and Lanyard Review

Gobspark Firesteel with Super Scraper and Lanyard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pick up a Gobspark steel and you can pretty much ditch the rest of your fire gear. This bad boy will give you an impressive shower of superheated sparks, guaranteed to light your tinder easily. The handle is at once simple and ingenious, allowing you to aim your sparks more accurately than with any other steel I've used. When the chips are down, this 'steel will get the job done, every time. And you won't find any better company on the web (or in the B&M world for that matter) than [...].
If you want foolproof, keep some 100% cotton balls with you. Smearing them with petroleum jelly will turn them into backwoods napalm. This will always light, and burn for five minutes or more. The beauty of the firesteel is it doesn't have to stay dry, it doesn't need fuel and it doesn't run out. Well, maybe after several thousand fires. After that I'll gladly spend another nine bucks to light a few thousand more.
This 'steel won't let you down. It's never failed me no matter the conditions. Five ***** only because I can't give more. :)

Magnesium Firestarter Review

Magnesium Firestarter
Average Reviews:

This is a high value item! I bought one at Wal-Mart, it didn't come with a striker, but I just used a 2" piece of hacksaw blade. I recommend to anyone that has this produce to find an old hacksaw blade to snap off a striker and attach it to the chain. Another thing, if you are carrying this you should carry some emergency tinder. I recommend a 35mm film cannister filled with either lint from the clothes dryer lint trap or cotton balls soaked with vaseline. Both will ignite on the first spark, it will make a believer out of you, trust me.

Ultimate Survival Technologies StrikeForce Fire Starter Review

Ultimate Survival Technologies StrikeForce Fire Starter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this and several other fire starting devises to test them out for emergencies. Overall I have to say the product works great and is very well constructed. It has earned a place in one of my emergency kits.
Pros:
* Good solid construction.
* Quality flint and thick enough to last a very long time.
* The safety orange is very visible.
* The bottom compartment is perfect for the storage of the chemical fire media that comes with the tool. There is even room for a few waterproof matches.
* The chemical fire starting media that comes with the tool is a nice touch.
* The lariat ensures that you will not loose the striker/cap.
Cons:
* The lariat could stand to be 2" - 3" longer. The short lariat makes striking with the cap a little awkward. I found undoing the lariat from the top loop of the tool and only attaching it to the base loop to alleviate most of the awkwardness. However, I plan to remove the lariat that comes with it all together and replace it with a length of Paracord that is a little longer to completely alleviate the awkwardness.
* The tool is heavier and bulkier than expected. However, I don't see that either the bulk or the weight could be alleviated and retain the quality of the product.
* The compartment in the base is NOT water tight.
Something to note. Pine needles do not ignite well using this tool. I tried for 20 minutes and could not for the life of me get them to go up. Fine very dry grasses work best. Dry grass was quick to ignite every time; typically 3 -5 strikes. This is also true of the fibrous material found at the base of a Palm Tree Leaf's Stalk (I am sure there is a name for this stuff, but I could not find it).
Remember to keep twigs and firewood ready to throw on as soon as you get the fire started.
I did not get a chance to play with the chemical fire media so I can not say much about it other than it comes in the base compartment in a well sealed water tight package.

Windmill Delta Stormproof Lighter, Black Review

Windmill Delta Stormproof Lighter, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was looking for a good Jeep lighter -- let me explain. I own a 2000 Jeep Wrangler, and the best times are with the top down and the doors off. As such there is quite a bit of wind; even at slow speeds it makes using a traditional lighter an impossible task. I could use the electric cigarette lighter but that involves disconnecting the 3 or 4 electronic devices I've got daisy-chained out of that jack - not appealing and a pain while driving. This lighter changes that -- I've used it at 75MPH on the highway with no issues at all. I particularly like the water-resistant (proof? haven't tested that) nature, the "take a beating" construction and quality electronic ignition - not a problem after quite a bit of abuse. This lighter also seems to be more frugal with fuel than other lighters I've used -- it takes quite a while to burn through an entire tank. All in all, a great device - I highly recommend it.

Bought two 3-packs of the smaller cans at a hardware store (they were out of the large ones). It proudly claims "Up to 3 hrs burn time" when in reality we got about 20 or 30 minutes out of each one. Swedish Firesteel- Scout Model Review

Swedish Firesteel- Scout Model
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Firesteel Scout is a great way to start a fire. I taught my Boy Scout troop and my 8yr old daughter how to start a fire with it. My daughter took 2 hours to start her first fire (she was very determined). After a lot of practice, she can now get it in a few minutes.
The secret to great sparks is a steady stroke and a lot of pressure. The stroke is more of a wrist movement than an arm movement. This allows you to keep the firesteel steadily pointed at your tinder and direct the sparks. The adults and older Boy Scouts were able to light a fire in a few strokes. The younger ones had trouble with getting pressure on the striker (like my daughter).
The best tinder I have found is cotton balls soaked in vasoline petroleum jelly (the original, unsented kind). I smash/work the vasoline into the cotton balls and store them in a water-tight 35mm film canister (you can stuff many balls into the canister). When you want to start a fire, take some cotton out and "fluff" it up a lot by pulling it apart a bunch. The little cotton fibers are what catch the sparks and light on fire. The more tiny fibers there are, the easier it is to set it ablaze. The cotton ball then continues to burn the petroleum jelly and cotton like a mini fireball. I routinely start a fire with one or two strokes.
Depending on how wet your kindling and twigs are, you can use more or less of the cotton from the film canister. A large cotton ball will burn for quite a long time and allow damp or wet leaves, twigs and sticks to catch fire.
Another useful tinder is an alcohol based hand sanitizer. Squeeze some onto leaves, dry grass, or small twigs and spark away. The alcohol flames are invisible during daylight, so be careful. Don't have it on your hands when you spark the Firesteel or you risk catching your hands on fire!
When backpacking, I carry the Scout Firesteel, matches and a BIC lighter. I haven't used the matches in a LONG time, and the lighter is used when I am lazy.
I plan on purchasing the Army model for general camping/scouting use since it is larger and longer lasting (the kids/scouts are always wanting to use it). The smaller version that fits on a keychain should also work, but having the longer piece of firesteel in the Scout (or Army) model allows for a nice big shower of sparks. Looking at the wear pattern on my well-used firesteel, the keychain model may be too short to produce the same quality and quantity of sparks.

Scout Fire Piston Review

Scout Fire Piston
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Reviews for the "scout" model fire piston on YouTube can go both ways. one young man gave it a great review and a fine tutorial while another showing an inferior model gave it a poor review. the Scout Fire Piston as distributed by this company is perhaps one of the finer pieces of outdoors equipment i've ever used. as it came to me the dark colored parts seem to be made of a high density, maybe fiber reinforced plastic. the rod it metal, perhaps aluminum though i'm not sure. it was shipped to me with two o-rings(one installed) prepacked with Vaseline, charcloth and a instruction/troubleshooting/what tinders to use 8 1/2 by 11 sheet. also the durability of the ziplock bags all these came in means you can pull it out of the box, test it, put it back in the bag, toss it right in your pack and go on your expedition of choice. while i will probably never go on an extended excursion without matches i will definately include this fire piston as a back up emergency fire starter. it's benefits over firesteel are extreme. it makes its own heat and friction in an enclosed space while a firesteel has to first heat the tinder before it will catch. if your not to sure about forking over the big bills as i was for cocobola or buffalo horn models put faith in something that i am assured will start a fire, be it for signal, heat or what have you, an item you can scratch or dig without concern for looks because it still works. this item works. i cannot express my satisfaction with this product enough and though currently out of stock on amazon i hope more come soon as i would love to hand a few out as christmas gifts to my closest friends. i would recommend one to anyone into survival and or preparedness who wants a backup firestarter they can rely on. also the fact that it's only possible wear item is the o-ring means it leaves no trace. lighters run out of fuel, ma tches burn up after each use and firesteels are a wear item. the best tinder prescribed is charcloth, otherwise known as roasted rag bits. its like green fire starting if there can be such a thing

This looked perfect for my daypack emergency kit. I actually bought this for the little snuff box, (who's gonna pay $4 for wood shavings?), turns out it holds only 1 oz. and it's PLASTIC! Under GOOD conditions that amount might start 2-3 fires. Had it been metal, adding an O-ring would keep it's contents dry. I could've got the sticks & made much more for same price!

Coleman Aluminum Mess Kit Review

Coleman Aluminum Mess Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this item almost as a joke because it was so cheep and so lightweight that I thought it would be junk. I figured that even if it was useless I wouldn't feel bad about throwing it out because of the price. What I found was that this little set actually works very well. I was impressed with the weight and it cooks a great steak and cleans easily. It packs up pretty small too.
My only two concerns with this product was that
1. Because the frying pan is two pieces and aluminum the handle tends to bend with too much weight. Long term I think bending will greatly weaken the handle.
2. The handle of the frying pan can get a little hot if left on the heat for more than a few minutes. Still easily handled with a towel or shirt sleeve.
These are the prices you pay for the very light weight and cheep price. All in all though, a great bargain that really works.

Swedish Firesteel - Army Model Review

Swedish Firesteel - Army Model
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Lanyard is plenty long and it makes lots of sparks (after a couple of scrapes to remove the paint). If lanyard was not long enough one could exercise ingenuity and put on a longer cord.
It would easily light propane, but if you try to ignite a piece of sheet paper you will have trouble. Sheet paper is not fine enough and is not proper tinder (though you could shred and rumple it to make good tinder). You need a finer tinder bundle. Paper towel was also unsuccessful. I had easy success with toilet paper and dryer lint. It sparks more if you slow down and increase pressure a little. If the woods are wet and you can find no dry tinder you are in trouble, which is why most people carry tinder or fire starter or pick it up on the trail when they can.
I think it is easier to use the magnesium fire starter with a basic metal jigsaw blade as the magnesium shavings will ignite paper towel easily, and can also ignite paper if you make a dime sized pile of shavings (when igniting paper don't set the end of the magnesium fire starter on the paper as when you scrape the flint the vibrations will jiggle the shavings all around). Even better than a jigsaw blade may be a short hacksaw blade because it has a good hole you can put the cord through.
In summary: if you carry or can find/make good tinder the Swedish firesteel is tough, simple, and a good product. For normal people who want a firestarter that is somewhat easier to use carry the magnesium. That is what I will carry, in addition to good tinder (cotton balls with vaseline mushed in), and a very good lighter (more lights/space than matches).
P.S. Just watched Bear G. in Man vs. Wild (Discovery channel) use this after a major rainstorm starting a fire on the first strike BECAUSE he had previously harvested and protected some very good tinder. He did not use a magnesium firestarter. It does produce a 5,500°F spark, but it needs a purchase (tinder). Also I want to repeat that the lanyard I got was plenty long, but hey it's just a piece of cord that you can cut. Live bold. Also the first time I tried to make sparks I made plenty. I do not see how someone could not (unless they had the metal striker upside down - read the directions!).
P.P.S. Watched Bear G. in Ecuador (?) NOT be able to start a fire with grass using this because everything was wet and darkness came in not enabling him to search for better (dry) tinder. With typical Bear pluck he stuffed his shirt with the grass for insulation and kept his chin up. I bet the mag would have started a fire.
P.P.P.S. Watched 'Survivorman' take a mag starter out into the desert and easily start a fire, but he used the edge of his knife to make shavings and strike the flint. I don't reccomend dulling a knife like this, use the back or anything else. Also he CARVED off magnesium and I have found just SCRAPING works well. Finally on the magnesium starter the flint is a small rod on the side and you don't whack it like in Jeremiah Johnson, but you just scrape it. I think I read one reviewer that broke his flint and I bet he was whacking it, just like in the movies.
This is a long review because this is a survival tool and you should have confidence in it's capabilities.

This is a very useful product. It is very light and small so it is easy to pack and carry. I use it to warm my tent, especially on a cold damp night. Swiss Army Volcano Stove (3 Piece Set) Review

Swiss Army Volcano Stove (3 Piece Set)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These things boil water very quickly, with very little fuel. You can bring a liter of water to a boil in about 5 minutes with a fist full of leaves and twigs. Not only is this a great tool for boiling water, but it is also an excellent fire starting tool in general. The stove has the perfect dimensions and ventilation to ignite dry fuel quickly, and to dry and ignite small amounts of wet fuel as well. The open top design allows you to load and dump fuel quickly when it is not being used to boil water.
One thing I do not like about the stove is that the bottle has no holder or handle, and cannot be manipulated outside of the stove until the contents cools or is used up. I find myself using the cork as a handle, pressing it in tightly, and then picking the bottle up with it, but I know this is not the safest way to do things. However, as previously stated, you CAN manipulate the bottle while it is inside the stove with a little cognizances of the potentially hot fuel in the bottom of the stove.
The cup, also being aluminum, must be handled with as much care as the bottle, but does have a handle, so it can be held with hot contents. All of this said, the aluminum construction also means the stove can be packed back up pretty quickly because once the fuel and the water are removed, it only takes a few seconds for everything to become cool enough to handle and pack back up. The thickness of the walls of all pieces, and the corrugation of the stove itself make this item especially resilient, considering its mostly aluminum construction.
Once you are aware of the caveats, and discover that this thing has many other potential uses than boiling water and cooking food, it is hard not to make room in your pack for it. I recommend this product to anyone who needs a reliable camp/survival stove.
