(More customer reviews)I purchased this microwave just over a month ago from one of the larger home improvement stores. My condo is smallish, so I decided to go with this less expensive model. It worked fine the first few times I used it, but after running it for more than 4 minutes at a time, it would shut off completely. The display would not even light up. The power would eventually return after about a half hour or so.
As it is still covered under the manufacturer's warranty, I was able to arrange for free service through Maytag's website. The technician just left and told me that the problem was "poor design." Apparently, there isn't enough cooling for some of the internal parts when the microwave is being run for more than a few minutes. To remedy the situation, he suggested that whenever I had the oven on for an "extended" amount of time, I should turn the vent fan on high so that the internal parts can remain cool. The technician said that this was a problem with many brands of over the range microwaves in this price range including LG, Kenmore, etc. He did say that GE was likely the best brand to buy.
As I spent a significant amount of money and effort between the initial purchase and having it installed, I will keep the oven and just remember to run it with the vent fan on. It works fine otherwise.
Update: 1 Year Later
After the initial service call, the original problem of the microwave overheating and shutting off after about 4 minutes of use continued regardless of whether or not the fan was turned on.
Just before the 1 year warranty expired, I decided to try and have it serviced one more time. The service person determined that the problem was improper installation. I helped him pull down the microwave and then he was able to move the fan housing cover into the proper position for external venting, the instructions of which were actually printed on a sticker right next to the housing cover. Go figure!
I'm upgrading my rating on this because the microwave oven has been working perfectly since then. I can recommend it without reservation, but just make sure it's installed correctly.

BDY Slow Cooker Mate Review

(More customer reviews)Electric steamers have had divided inserts for years, so that you can cook multiple dishes at the same time. When I saw the Slow Cooker Mate, my first thought was "Why hasn't someone done that with a slow cooker before?"
It's a great idea. You can cook a main dish in the large insert, and one or two side dishes in the small insert. The operation of the cooker is pretty straightforward... slow cookers are about the simplest appliance in the kitchen, so there's not much to say there. It has all the basic features. The maximum cooking time is a very respectable 18 hours.
The large insert is 6 quarts, the small insert has two one-quart sections. Of course, you can't fill the inserts up to the top, so the usable capacity of the large insert is 4.5 - 5 quarts, and 3 cups for the small insert sections.
One surprise I got is that the small insert is quite deep, and takes a lot of capacity from the large insert. The instruction book says to only fill the large insert half way (3 quarts) when using the small insert. That's still plenty of capacity if you're making two side dishes.
The instruction book includes several menus for a main dish and two side dishes, which is enough to give you an idea of how to make your own menus.
I'm very happy with the Slow Cooker Mate. It's a product that was long overdue.

The brown rice takes a little longer to cook because you have to double the amount of water. For example, if you use one cup of white rice, you use one cup of water. With the brown rice, you use two cups of water for one cup of brown rice. Make sure to rinse the rice several times before placing it in the cooker. Rinse until the water is relatively clear. This step will keep the rice from being sticky after it cooks. Clean up was a breeze.

(More customer reviews)I received this yesterday and tried it out on my Weber Kettle grill today. I preheated it as directed and placed some rib eye steaks on the Tuscan grill. Giving each a quarter turn after two minutes produced a very distinctive diamond-shaped pattern that makes your food look very professionally-grilled. At 14" square, you have a fair-sized grilling surface as well. It is heavy to be sure, but cast iron is one of the best grilling surfaces imaginable and the V-shaped grates will assure you that your food will not only taste great, but look really appetizing too!
NOTE: Make sure that you season this accessory before using it or you will probably get a very unpleasant metallic taste. I coated the entire surface, including the removable legs, with a light film of melted shortening. I placed two baking pans lined with foil into a 350 degree oven and stood the grill upright on the sheets. I baked it for an hour, shut off the oven and went to bed. In the morning, it was cool and completely seasoned. After using it, I let it cool down and soaked it in hot water in the sink. Then I scraped it down with a plastic brush and repeated the seasoning process. This really isn't necessary but I do it just to add a stronger finish.

Kikkerland Tape Timer Aluminum Review

(More customer reviews)I have only owned this product for a week, however it appears to work nicely. The best part of this timer is its design. Everyone who has seen it loves it.
One note about functionality: To operate this timer, you have to pull the "tape" all the way out (60 mins) then you use an adjustment wheel on the bottom to retract it to the time you want. The unit will only work if operated this way. I did not find this to be a negative, but it is a bit more work than you would expect just from looking at it.

I tried it out and it seemed to work alright. However, less than 24 hours after we got it, it was already broken. Something inside would rattle and you can't take it apart to see if you could fix it so, needless to say, it's just a piece of cute junk. I ended up buying a basic plain $5 kitchen timer that did the job this timer was supposed to do.

You can use it to vent up and out, or it can recycle the air and let it flow back in the room. I'm using it for the latter. The fan is very loud, I find, but not so bad that I wouldn't use it.
