Sengoku Heat Mate Portable Radiant Kerosene Heater 10,600 BTU , Beige #HMHR-1101 Review

Sengoku Heat Mate Portable Radiant Kerosene Heater 10,600 BTU , Beige #HMHR-1101
Average Reviews:

I've been using this heater for several years and have had no problems whatsoever. About 1/2 the heat is radiant, the other half is hot air rising from the unit.
It will burn for 12 to 14 hours before having to refill its 1-gallon removable tank. During this time, it emits no smell at all. The heat adjustment range is from 90% to 100% - like any kerosene heater, it is not safe to try to turn it down below this range.
The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because the electric lighter bulb burns out too easily - it is like a flashlight bulb without the glass bulb - when you press the igniter, the bulb's glowing filament presses against the wick, igniting it - if the wick doesn't break the filament. In this case, a long wand butane lighter works just fine.
It is true that the very first time a kerosene heater is lit, it will stink. Once the burner has come up to operating temperature for the first time, the metal parts become annealed and ready for use. If the other reviewer lit it for the first time indoors, not knowing this, it would have been a very unpleasant surprise. The first time should be outdoors. After that, you can take it inside.

Dimplex CFP3652C 20"Cherry Electric Fireplace looks awesome. The flame is way to dark and there is no controls to make it brighter. The heat it puts out is ok for a small space. Thats all it really is, is a space heater in a fireplace cabinet. The other problem with the Fireplace is it is noisy and can get on ones nerves. The motor in the back makes all kinds of noise after about the 2nd week of use. For the price i paid for this i could have gotten a pellet stove and been much happier. It cost about $40 a mouth to run and that is not savings when you can get a pellet stove for around the same price and save a ton of money and have a real fire place at the same time. Again its nice just priced way to high.

It is beautiful and feels like real brick, as well as looks like real brick but it does need a hearth under it so that the heat can generate higher and it will look really real. It was delivered undamaged except for a ring mark on the granite mantel which looks like someone put a cup or glass on. I haven't tried to get it out but I am sure it will buff out. I love it regardless of the little things I want to do with it.

Great little heater.
Only wish it had a thermostat like the larger ones.
On the little trailer I am using it for heat, the low setting
is warmer than I need unless the weather is really cold.
I can get by if I turn the control down below the low setting,
but you have to be careful to check that the flame is
burning blue, not yellow or orange.

Accommodating spaces up to 300 square feet, this 10,000-BTU dual-fuel wall heater works with natural gas or LP hook-up to ensure a cozy, warm living environment. The unit's electronic piezo ignition system offers quick start-ups with one simple step (no matches, batteries, or other lighting sources required), and its top-mounted controls make it easy to adjust the heat level from low to high, depending on the amount of heat desired. Once started, the heater's dancing blue-flame burner produces gentle, convective warmth to quickly heat the surrounding air with 99-percent efficiency, costing only pennies an hour. The unvented heater should be used as supplemental heat, in addition to a home's primary heat source; however, if the power goes out or in an emergency situation, it can be safely used as a primary heat source. For peace of mind, the heater comes equipped with a range of safety features, including a "safe watch" pilot assembly, which will automatically shut off the flow of gas if the pilot becomes extinguished; a built-in oxygen-depletion sensor that extinguishes the flame if oxygen levels drop below A.N.S.I. standards; and a pressure regulator that maintains a steady gas flow for an even burn. Wall-mounting brackets and detailed instructions come included for easy installation. The wall heater measures approximately 6-3/8 by 14-1/8 by 19-1/8 inches.

Bionaire BFH5000-UM Electric Fireplace Heater with Remote Control Review

Bionaire BFH5000-UM Electric Fireplace Heater with Remote Control
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The fireplace works fine in it's most important aspect: generating heat. It has a stylish, very contemporary design. The glass front is thick and smooth and you don't need to worry about cracking it. The blue backlit display turns off after a few seconds which is nice. Great remote that supports all functions. There are a few annoyances that were weighing too heavily for us and made me return it, though: First, since the unit is only a few inches deep and it is either wall-mounted or on the stand there is no easy way to hide the cord, which really spoils the appearance. The fan is a little noisy and keeps on running even when the heat is turned off, probably to cool the two lamps and to generate the light effect. The "crackling wood" sound effect sounds hollow and thin but can thankfully be turned off. Finally, the light effect is not realistic at all, just a waving background.
If you don't mind these annoyances, it is a good product.

For instant warmth plus ambiance, this electric fan heater features realistic glowing logs and embers for the beauty of a fireplace without the hassle of cut wood, an open fire, propane, or fumes. The unit requires no installation and can be placed in any room with its sturdy floor stand or wall-mounted with the included hardware. Simply plug it in and turn it on. Heat emanates from vents below the glass, quickly heating up the room, and the realistic flame effect can function with or without the heat. Push-button controls and an easy-to-read programmable digital display makes it effortless to operate. The unit's thermostat allows for setting the fireplace to a comfortable temperature, while its 12-hour on-off timer can be set to preheat a room or to automatically turn the heater off after a specified amount of time. In addition, the unit's remote control works great for adjusting the temperature from across the room. Safety features include tip-over protection and overheat protection, which automatically turn the heater off if it accidentally gets knocked over or starts to overheat. With its sleek modern design, the fireplace heater measures 31-1/4 by 4 by 23-7/8 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

After searching online for a more contemporary looking fireplace, I found this one on another website. I opted for buying with Amazon.com since I had bought from them before and never had any problems, and the prices were the same at both retailers. The fireplace arrived when they said, two days before Christmas and just as the weather was turning cold again so it was perfect timing. The fireplace was well packed with lots of foam and plastic surrounding the unit to give it more than adequate protection. I plugged it in and away it went-the flames look good, the heat unit does a nice job and the overall look is gorgeous. I have a black lacquer tv stand and this matches the modern look of the living room well. The quality is nice for the price and I'm pretty happy with it overall. The only complaint is that the pic shows a silver trim around the flames and mine arrived with black trim-not a big deal but it would have been nice to have a choice of one or the other. To me the pic should show exactly what you will get, not something close to it unless it says that. Having said that, I am pretty stoked with this item since it's my largest Amazon.com purchase so far.

Coleman 5053A751 ProCat Perfectemp Catalytic Propane Heater with Instastart Technology Review

Coleman 5053A751 ProCat Perfectemp Catalytic Propane Heater with Instastart Technology
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this catalytic propane heater to heat my tent for winter camping with my son for his Cub Scout winter camps. I tried the heater out on a three night camp out the last week of October, 2006 at 7,000 feet in the San Bernardino Mountains. Those nights dipped in the high 20's. The heater worked very well with only a few concerns, which were easily overcome. I placed the lit heater in my tent well in advance of retiring for the evening and 6 hours later replaced the emptied propane cylinder right away and re-started the heater for the remainder of the morning. My son and I were nice and warm when we went to bed and stayed warm all the night through. Sure is nice to be able to stand up and dress in a warm tent in the morning. Next we will be trying the heater out at a snow camp in February with temps expected to be in the low teens.
Reading the directions dismissed any apprehensions of opertion. And yes, as another reviewer commented... the unit does throw out a small fire ball when first lit. YIKES! However, should you read the instructions BEFORE USE... you are forewarned about this and the reader is instructed NOT to light the heater facing anyone/pets/tent or indoors because of this issue. Instructions are not placed with the item for looks you know, you have to read them! OK, it spits out a small fire ball at first. Big deal... nothing too intense that an average human can not adapt to.
As for the "hot oil smell," noted by another reviewer... yes, there is a "smell," that emits from the operating unit. How one describes that smell will vary. Each individual person's sensitivity to that smell will also vary. To me the "smell" was simply like sightly hot metal, as with any other heater, and faint enough that it did not bother me at all. However, should one be rather sensitive to the "smell" it may prove uncomfortable.
The battery operated fan that blows the heated air away from the unit is awesome. The fan does not blow the volume of air like a fan on your desk or counter top might. The fan is much smaller, yet it does greatly aid in the ciculation of the heat. Without the fan on, the heat is simply radiated out and the heat is not evenly distributed throughout the tent. One huge issue with the fan... it eats batteries like a child eats candy. Two "D" batteries will run the fan for one full night. That's it, no more. Recharable batteries are strongly recommended to keep the battery budget in check, because the fan really needs to be used.
Some advise... 1.) Light the heater OUTSIDE of your tent (remember there will be small fire ball emiting from the heater when it is lit). 2.) Start the unit and place in your tent at least one full hour before going to bed. That way your tent will be nice and warm when you go to bed. 3.) Keep a replacement propane cylinder close by for replacement in the early morning hours. Should you allow the tent to cool before replacing the propane cylinder and re-igniting the heater it will take a very, very long time to warm the tent up. Remeber... nights are coldest the hours just before dawn (usally) which is much colder than when you started to warm your tent up the previous evening. Also, the larger the tent (or area being heated) the longer it will take to bring up and maintain the temp. I am going to buy a second heater for my large three room tent. This way I can start one heater well before going to bed to heat the tent, and then 6 hours before I plan to wake up I can start the second heater. With two heaters operating at the same time in my large tent the heat will be easily maintained (hopfully even with winds) but also the first heater will will run out of fuel and shut off in the night and the second heater will continue heating maintaining the temp without me getting up to change out the propane cylinder. 4.) Place the heater in an area of your tent in which nothing will come in contact with it. The heater grid gets very hot and will burn you or any other item that contacts it.
All in all, this ProCat Catalytic Propane Heater is a great heater. It is larger than others on the market (the heating head is larger in diameter), including other Coleman brand heaters. It appears to be the only one with a fan to assist in heat distribution. It puts out a good amount of heart. The only serious failing on this ProCat heater is that the output can not be regulated. The heater is either on full blast or completly off.
Please note though, the more ventilated your tent the less effective any heater will be in heating such a tent, let alone this particular heater. Thus, should you have a "summer family camping tent" that is very well ventilated either consider purchasing two heaters to heat your tent, or in addition to this heater purchase a tent that is designed for cold weather (which is less vented than summer family tents).

Coleman BlackCat PerfecTemp Catalytic Heater Review

Coleman BlackCat PerfecTemp Catalytic Heater
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this from a retail box store for a little more than it is going for here on Amazon for an early season camping trip just 2 weeks ago. It looks great and performs very well. Right out of the box, the two legs that hold it up kept collapsing. I had to tighten each of them up with a phillips screwdriver. It stayed up with no problem after that. It lights almost instantly with a match (more on that later) by holding it against the outside of the ring. For the first while, it was burning off the factory 'oils', etc, so I was a bit stinky. After that, it was fine. I recommend running it outside of your sleeping space for 5 to 10 minutes to get that initial stink out.
It will heat for around 7 hours on the high setting with one standard size bottle of propane. They do not recommend that this be connected to a full size propane tank.
Really the only problem that I had with the unit as a whole was that fact that there was no electronic ignition on it. You have to light it outside of the sleeping space with a match/lighter. I would have bought the one with the built in igniter, if the store had it in stock. Otherwise it works great.

Mr. Heater 30,000 BTU Natural Gas Blue Flame Vent Free Heater Review

Mr. Heater 30,000 BTU Natural Gas Blue Flame Vent Free Heater
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, I got this nat gas heater at the end of November of 2010 for a 17'x 22' finished basement room with a 7' drop ceiling. I live in the Northeast so we get pretty cold winters here. This heater was purchased for a secondary back up heating system in the event of a power failure however, I use it daily and love it. My initial concerns before the unit was installed: plumbing gas pipe, ventless emmissions, CO2, odors and function(s). I'll address all the concerns as best I can.
-Plumbing gas pipe: Don't do it yourself, hire a professional, you'll sleep a lot sounder, a small price to pay for safety (it'll pay for itself in the long run anyway)
-Ventless Emissions: I researched here and there and everywhere, this camp is split from what I can see, some say there is and some say there isn't any, I don't know. The next thing I cover may or may not be related to this.
-CO2 and odors: I installed $40 Kidde CO2 detector 12 feet away from the heater and it still reads 0 all the time (I was expecting 5-7 ppm but I got 0, that's great). Now onto, the odors, yes there are odors, I'll admit that when I first fired this unit up I was greatly impressed with the heat output but wasn't at all happy about the smell. It was a chemical smell, which after the heater stopped running the smell soon went away within a minute or two. I would masked the odor with an air freshener when the heater ran and it was fine. It has since been a month and a half now and the heater has ran frequently on a daily basis and the odor/smell is virtually gone. A relief to say the least. I do smell it briefly at start up sometimes but that's only for a second or two. I think it was the paint/parts burning off that new heater smell so to speak.
-Function(s): Although it looks like there is, there isn't a digital thermostat, It's a 1 through 5 dial type which runs the duration of how long the heater runs with some internal temp setting (ex. setting 1 = 68-72 degrees). Flame height is the same always, temp dial does not regulate height. Flame is not like pictured, it's better, it looks like what's on your stove top. Flame is a nice blue, at start up I get orange streaks, I found out that's its only dust in the air, it goes away in about 15-25 min. The fan, basically is useless, poor design, could be a lot better, I don't use it. I have a 10" Honeywell table top swivel fan blowing across the heater, left to right, it's even with the top of the unit to circulate the heat in a circle around the room. My unit is not wall mounted, it is free standing on carpet, carpet does get warm to the touch but never hot. No electric required (unless you use the fan), the spark igniter runs on a AA battery (supplied), there is no pilot when it's off.
So how well does it work? Well, Freaking Amazing!!! It's instant heat!!! To get an idea of the heat output, if you have a gas stove, turn all stove top burners on at the same time, don't run the vent, put your hands near the vent away from the flame. I have 4 burners on my stove and that is what is feels like for me. The burner is this unit is about 16" long. At setting 1, once my room is warmed up, the heater runs for a minute or two then knocks off, it'll do this 3-4 times an hour. As for energy savings, I can already see it, I used to use a electric ceramic tower heater to heat (pointed at me) the room at $50+ a month more on the electric bill, that's no more and the whole room is toasty and to boot my gas usage went down slightly compared to the previous year at this time. Win, win, win.
Pro's:
Heat, heat and more heat. Instant heat.
Energy savings (it will pay for itself)
CO2 - not an issue in my setup of a basement room
Looks - it looks nice as a unit alone and when its running.
Con's:
Blower fan, useless
Dial temp gauge - No digital temp setting (it would be a great feature and for setting lower temps too)
Odor - goes away over time with use
There ya go I hope this helps you.

Coleman SportCat PerfecTemp Catalytic Heater with InstaStart Technology Review

Coleman SportCat PerfecTemp Catalytic Heater with InstaStart Technology
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I didn't have any design or function problems with my unit, at all. It worked fine right out of the box. For my purpose (heating a tent or a small bedroom in case of a power outage), I'd buy it again (and the price is right). BTW, the Winter temps in northwest WA are usually pretty mild at sea level, so although the 1500 BTU output isn't much, it is all I need.
The very first time I lit my unit, I was puzzled why it took 5 or 6 clicks of the insta-start spark to light it, even though Coleman predicts this in their instructions. By telling you to start clicking the spark right after opening the valve, I suspect Coleman is making sure you don't let a large amount of propane build up before you hit the button. In other words, I suspect it takes the same amount of time to click the starter 5 or 6 times as for the unit to build up enough propane to light. When it does, there is a small poof of blue and yellow flame. True, if you waited a few minutes after you open the valve to click the starter, one click might be enough to light the unit, but you might also lose your eyebrows (or worse).
One thing for sure... run your heater outside or maybe in your garage for a LONG time when it is brand new. In fact, I'd say use up a whole container of propane to break it in. The reason for this is that the smell this heater puts out when it is new is nasty! Ever get a rug stuck in the rotating brush of your vacuum cleaner, and the rubber drive belt starts to smoke? Well, it's like that smell TIMES TEN! I couldn't find any mention of the odor or warnings about toxicity in the Coleman booklet, so Coleman must not think is is harmful. But, believe me, it sure is unpleasant and Coleman should mention the idea of "breaking in" the heater when new. After I ran about 3/4 of a tank of propane through my new heater, the smell was completely gone. But, fair warning... break this puppy in, before you bring it inside with you.
Otherwise, no complaints, and I'd buy it again and recommend it to you. Stay warm out there!

Whether you're sleeping in an electricity-free cabin or an outdoor tent, the Coleman SportCat PerfectTemp propane heater will warm up any camping adventure. The SportCat, which attaches to the top of a 16.4-ounce propane cylinder, provides plenty of warmth when you need it, with an output of 1,500 BTUs for up to 14 hours per tank. As a result, those chilly fall and spring evenings won't seem quite so inhumane while you sleep. The heater is also easy to light: just flip the electronic ignition switch and you're set. No messing with frustrating matches or finicky gas valves. And thanks to the SportCat's stable, detachable base, you can rest the heater on pretty much any surface. Also equipped with an integrated handle for easy carrying, the SportCat delivers all the warmth you need for your camping expeditions.
Note: proper ventilation is required for the SportCat to work safely.
About Coleman More than 100 years ago, a young man with an entrepreneurial spirit and a better idea began manufacturing lanterns in Wichita, Kansas. His name was W.C. Coleman, and the company he founded would change life in America. A man plagued with such poor vision he sometimes had to ask classmates to read aloud to him, Coleman saw a brilliant light in 1900 in a drugstore window that stopped him in his tracks. He inquired about the light inside and discovered he was able to read even the small print on a medicine bottle by the illumination. The lamps had mantles, not wicks, and were fueled by gasoline under pressure instead of coal oil. Soon afterward, Coleman started a lighting service that offered a "no light, no pay" clause--a big step forward for merchants who were burned by inferior products that rarely worked--and drew substantial interest from businesses that wanted to keep their lights on after dark.
In the ensuing years, Coleman expanded its product line well beyond lanterns. The company's current catalog is thick with products that make spending time outdoors a pleasure. There are coolers that keep food and drinks cold for days on end, comfortable airbeds that won't deflate during the night, a complete line of LED lights that last for years, powerful portable grills that cook with an authentic open-grill flame, and much, much more. Coleman has truly fashioned much of our outdoor camping experience, and expects to do so for generations to come.

I bought the Mr. Heater Hose with a regulator and quick disconnect fitting for the Big Buddy Heater. When it arrived, I discovered that I could not connect the fuel filter to the quick disconnect fitting. I called Mr. Heater, and they informed me that I didn't need the fuel filter if I was using a hose with an attached regulator. It would have been nice if Amazon had indicated this fact when I purchased the filter. But, none of the specifications for the product demonstrated this redundency. If you buy the hose with the regulator, then you don't need this filter.

Vogelzang "The Shiloh" Wood-Burning Stove, Model# TR002B Review

Vogelzang The Shiloh Wood-Burning Stove, Model# TR002B

after much research, looking at different stoves locally and online, i decided on a shiloh. mostly because it was available locally and has the ash drawer for easy cleaning.
I had a working budget of $1k for the entire stove project. I ended up being very close to that, $1050 after it was all said and done, including a full cord of hard wood for fuel.
the prices online for this stove are absurd. i bought the Shiloh on sale at my local Menards for $498. i picked it up and they loaded it in my Jeep. unloading is certainly a two person job. even with the fire bricks removed, the stove is probably just over 200lbs. i managed to wrestle it in the house my self with some clever use of a mechanics dolly and some brute force.
installation was pretty easy. after $75 for a mechanical permit with the city to install, i started at it. total install time was about 8 hrs. Menards also had a complete Selkirk supervent brand HT UL rated chimney for $220 or so.
the chimney instructions are detailed and straight forward. my city conforms to manufacturer specifications for install and has no other codes required for installation. vogelzang requires a minimum 15' height chimney. that works out to roughly 5' inside, and 10' above. that's pretty tall, the top of the chimney extends about 5' above the roof line.
now, for stove performance. first thing i noticed, it's really hard to get a fire going. the door has to be cracked, and you need to get the chimney good and hot to get a strong draft. once the draft is strong, you need to burn for at least a half hour to get some coals started. overall, it's tolerable, but a pain.
another point to make, which is true of all stoves, only really seasoned and DRY wood will burn. the stove flat-out WILL NOT burn wood that is even slightly damp. it has to be totally dry. once it's dry, the stove burns very well. it will last several hours with a load of oak or cherry. but, no-where near the 6-8hrs burn time Vogelzang claims.
in terms of quality, it appears to be built well. weld quality is acceptable, not great. it's (unfortunately) made in China. overall, as the adage goes: you do get what you pay for. the painted finish is not very durable. it scratches quite easily.
summary
the stove looks great. we get complements on it all the time. this is a nice, affordable option for weekend and evening burners who want to supplement their winter heat with wood, or are looking for emergency use only. it's probably not the best option as a primary heating stove. you will quickly get annoyed with it's short comings. i'm satisfied with the purchase.

Coleman SportCat PerfecTemp Catalytic Heater Review

Coleman SportCat PerfecTemp Catalytic Heater

I have had this little heater for over one year. The first time I used it was in a tent trailer and it was a bad experience.
The heater stunk the whole trailer with a strong pungent oil odor. The trailer was cold to begin with and I had to open the door and windows to air it out. Some camping friends with experience with these type of heaters explained you needed to burn off the oil residue in the heater to get rid of the odor. I burned one 16oz can on the heater outdoors overnight and this got rid of the oil odor. My advise with this heater is to try it out first at home in the garage or another outside building and break it in before taking it with you on a camping outing.
Aside from this initial bad experience, this is a great little portable heater that suits my camping needs.

Coleman BlackCat PerfecTemp Catalytic Heater with InstaStart Technology Review

Coleman BlackCat PerfecTemp Catalytic Heater with InstaStart Technology

I took this heater camping in Delaware on Columbus Day weekend (October). I used it in a well-ventilated 4-person (medium-sized) tent. The first 2 days were cold and rainy, and I was VERY glad to have brought it.
Now, this heater is not going to make your tent into a sauna on a very cold day, so don't expect to get in the tent and lounge in your skivies like you might do at home! But after burning for about 10-15 min, it should raise the temperature in your tent several precious degrees making it bareable; even comfortable. For instance, it did keep me from having to wear my heavy coat while inside the tent, which pleased me.
Since it would certainly heat a smaller, less-vented tent better than a larger, more-vented tent, your results may vary. As for me, the results were not dramatic, but certainly noticable, and well worth the money spent.
Note: This kind of catalytic heater requires those mini propane tanks. It works by a chemical reaction between a meshy platinum filter and the burning propane gas, so while there's no obvious propane smell and no open flame, there's still a very hot surface that could catch objects on fire if they are placed directly in front of it for too long. FYI, when you first light it, you may indeed see an igniting flame, but that is just upon start up. Once the starting flame vanishes, put your hand gently over the heater - if you feel it eminating warmth, you'll know you've started it successfully.
Warning: Just as the instructions warn you, I do NOT recommend leaving this heater on through the night when you and your family are asleep. It is both a breathing hazard, and an obvious fire hazard. But warning stated, I did just that and I didn't have a problem. I slept very comfortably on a couple cold nights and I didn't die in my sleep. Again, your results may vary.
However, I should note that my own tent is extreamly well ventilated, with the entire ceiling being mesh under the rain fly. In addition, the night was windy, and I could actually feel a breeze of air circulating in my tent. In truth, if I had brought a less-ventilated, cold-weather tent with me that weekend, the heater may not have been needed at night, but since I was stuck with a drafty tent, I took the calculated risk that this would also lessen the threat. In addition, I took every possible precaution to ensure that nothing was near the heater before going to sleep. Even so, it's a risk that I could not blame anyone for not wanting to take. Also, if you do this, expect the propane tank to be empty by morning.
All in all, other than the obvious handle-with-care factors, I could not find a downside to this product. In fact, I could not imagine cold-weather camping without it. P.S. They also sell a slightly cheaper version, which is the same in every way, except it does not have the self-starting switch, and you start it manually with a lit match.
